Collected in a single volume, the two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. The Iliad (sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek states (Achaeans). The poem tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. The Odyssey follows the Greek hero Ulysses (Odysseus), king of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War. After the war itself, which lasted ten years, his journey lasts for ten additional years, during which time Ulysses encounters many perils.
